Mass Production Is Coming Online
Our awesome friends at Compumold just finished machining a custom injection mold to manufacture our frames. Netzer Plastics is donating their equipment and employees to make these, we only have to pay for raw material. Thanks to your donations we are able to scale up our production to make nearly 5 times as many shields a week!

The clear visors are being produced in hour on our new (to us) clicker die press. we can make over 1000 visors a day! Thanks to all of our donors for making this possible.
All our design files are open source, we encourage you to help make more PPE for your own community:

Our Updated Pitch
We want to save lives.
And with your help, we are doing it.
We have already delivered over 5,800 face shields to Milwaukee area medical workers.
How did this happen? How did a team of artists, inventors, tinkerers, and builders turn their attention to making medical equipment?
It happened because of COVID-19. We had to close Milwaukee Makerspace temporarily because of COVID-19, but we couldn’t sit idly by while our community, our neighbors, our friends were in need.
There is an extreme shortage of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for medical professionals. The people who keep us healthy and safe are currently unable to keep themselves safe. To combat this problem, the global maker community is creating and sharing PPE solutions around the world.
We have joined that effort. A few of our members have developed a face shield based on an existing popular design (the 3DVerkstan). We have gone through some design changes and have looked for ways to improve the production process as well.
We started by cutting the frames on a CNC router, but as demand increased for the shields, we realized we needed a faster production method, so switched to injection molding. With the CNC router, we could produce (on a really good day) 500 frames. With injection molding, we can produce 2,750 frames a day.
The visors are die stamped out of clear plastic. We had an amazing donation of 5,000 visors from a local company to get us started and now we are stamping visors ourselves. We can stamp over 1000 visors a day.
So what’s next? Well, Milwaukee Makerspace is a 501(c)3 organization, all volunteer run, and we’ve got a few people who are doing a lot of work. Members are donating their expertise, machines, and materials, and some of them are donating their own money to this cause.
As an organization, we’ve also pledged a portion of our budget to this project, even though we’ve closed the space and suspended dues from members. We may be applying for grants to help us provide these PPE donations to local hospitals and clinics (and yes, we’ve already got a list of recipients we are working with).
We have also set up this campaign from the Milwaukee community for the raw materials. Please share this page with your friends. For every $10 you donate, you can share in our mission of helping protect our medical workers by making over 15 face shields freely available to people who need them.
We are all volunteers trying to help our community. (At least ten of our members were infected with COVID-19. Two of them had to be hospitalized.) This virus is affecting everyone, so we’ve all got to pitch in and help. We hope our contribution will allow the medical staff of our hospitals to be safe. Expect more updates soon… We’re all working as fast as we can, but we do want to share our progress on this as time allows.
