Power and Promise is a youth leadership training & peer mentoring program. For the 1st time, system impacted high school students will mentor elementary and middle school students from the same communities who have experienced similar levels of trauma and exposure to violence. Leadership training will include Conflict Resolution, Relationship building, Community Engagement, and Character Development.
Since 2010, VOICES has been working to change the narrative of some of our most vulnerable youth and families in Indianapolis. 93% of our students are male, 64% are African- American and are system impacted. VOICES offers a culturally responsive, healing centered engaged learning environment that meets the needs of our youth. We excel at working with trauma & system impacted youth that are searching for an identity.
With your help, our 1st cohort of students will complete a series of paid training workshops and will then take skills learned and mentor younger students in 4 local elementary schools over the course of 1 year. Funds raised will be used to supplement staffing needs, and provide stipends to youth leaders for training & mentoring hours.
Our goals for this project are to foster positive youth development and reduce negative outcomes related to violence exposure among African-American youth. VOICES strives to capitalize on the value of culturally relevant peer influence in order to help lower rates of youth violence and increase pro-social influences.
Think we can do this together? We do...and they are counting on us!
