In endless love & solidarity for SMWC, our BFFs in the movement, we're raising funds for their annual Karaoke fundraiser.
Portland Outright is a youth-led organization building the power of LGBTQ+ young people in Maine (aged 14-25) through organizing for LGBTQ+, racial, and economic justice. Our work is led by young, queer, trans, people and their allies from low-income communities in Maine who address homelessness, criminalization, and health issues from the seat of personal experience. Our mission is to provide resources to alleviate the day-to-day struggles of our young participants while actively seeking long-lasting systemic change within our communities.
Portland Outright first partnered with the Southern Maine Workers' Center in 2015, during their Campaign to Raise the Minimum Wage in Portland, calling us in to help them oppose carve outs for young workers that would exclude them from receiving the new minimum wage. Together, we ensured that workers of all ages got a raise! That same year we moved in together on Washington Ave, sharing political home and subsiding Outright's rent while we built our organization from the ground up.
Over the years the Southern Maine Workers' Center has shown up hard for Outright's organizing and community--from the Pocket's wage theft incident in 2015 to our direct actions during Portland Pride every year, sharing space, resources, and vision. We've stuck together through tremendous heartbreak and the most powerful victories, following each other to new offices, bolder organizing, and whatever the world throws our way. They have been our dearest friends and closest allies in the work, without whom our success would not have been possible. We're so proud of who they are in our community and to call them our family. This type of intergenerational comraderie helps keep our movements strong, so please join us by investing in the future of the Southern Maine Workers' Center!
Donate today, then join us ALL on February 15th at 8pm at the Apohodian Theatre in Portland. Whether you can give $5, $10, $50, or $100, every little bit helps. By giving, you become part of our movement--one that is truly rooted in collective action, care, and love.
If we reach our goal, we'll collectively sing a song for collective liberation!
