In Ukraine, parents of children with special needs are encouraged to hand their children over to state care. They are told their children are a burden on society. Children are sent to institutions where they are subjected to abuse and neglect. There is minimal support available to parents who fight to keep their children with them. Maya's Hope wants to help relieve some of the burden on these amazing parents and assist in keeping children with their families, where they belong. Vladik is 12 years old and lives with his parents in Ukraine. During a complicated birth he was deprived of oxygen, resulting in damage to his brain. He has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
For 12 years his parents have managed to provide for his needs without assistance. But last year he had pneumonia three times. His doctors placed a tracheostomy tube to open up his airways and support his breathing. Maya's Hope purchased an oxygen concentrator and shower chair for him last year. Recently his mother wrote to us:
"Good afternoon, Maya and Keshia! Once again, I want to thank our family for their help. You have made life easier for us and brought peace. Now, having an oxygen concentrator, we are much less likely to be in intensive care. And it ss a pleasure to bathe Vlad on his bathchair! Once again, I want to ask you for help, as our family cannot cope on our own. Perhaps now is not the right time, in view of the current situation in the world, but a recent case convinced me not to put it off.
In our multi-storey building, an accident occurred and the electricity was cut off for 12 hours. These were the worst 12 hours of our lives! Since Vladik has a tracheostomy, we have to remove sputum and mucus every hour. If this is not done, then he will simply suffocate. We have a suction machine that runs of electricity, but in an emergency it turned out to be useless.
A portable electric suction pump is our salvation. It is lightweight and can be moved from room to room, also taken with you on the road (once a month we go to change the tracheostomy), and of course this is our peace of mind in any unforeseen situations (lack of electricity or damage to the stationary aspirator).
For our family, the cost of the device is a huge amount.
We will be very grateful for your help! Be healthy, take care of yourself and your family!"
Can you help us purchase a portable suction machine for Vlad?
