After the untimely death of her one year old daugher and in an effort to prevent parents and families from suffering this same heartbreak, in 2012, Shantell Roberts founded Touching Young Lives, Incorporated; a 501c3 nonprofit organization that focuses on the health and well-being of infants and children. TYL, Inc. partners with various daycare centers, head start programs, shelters, and faith-based ministries to provide education on the importance of infant care and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (S.I.D.S.) prevention. Since its formation, she has worked with hundreds of children in Baltimore with one goal in mind, preventing another untimely infant death.
Interested in creating a safe sleeping solution to families and care givers across city/county jurisdictions and across the socioeconomic spectrum, in October of 2016, Shantell was accepted into the John Hopkins University Social Innovation Lab for her proposal to distribute Portable Alternative Cribs (P.A.C.s) to families in need of safe sleeping spaces for their infants. Portable Alternative Cribs are simple cardboard boxes with padding at the bottom that contain (1) pack of diapers, (1) pack of wipes, (1) infant onesie, (1) infant sleeper and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome preventative education. Each P.A.C. costs $50.
