Philip will be running in the California International Marathon (CIM) on December 8, 2019. This will be marathon number 5 for Philip. Philip is one of three blind athletes from the DC Achilles International Chapter that plans to run in this year's marathon. CIM has been the location for the United States Association of Blind Athletes national championship for the past 11 years.
Kay, Philip's sighted guide for the race is from San Francisco. However, Philip and Kay have been able to get in a couple of training runs to build their comfort of running together. They have a couple more runs planned throughout the Fall as well.
Philip started running through a sports camp offered for blind youth at Western Michigan University. He has completed numerous 5K's, 10K's, 15 half marathons, four marathons, 4 sprint and one Olympic triathlon.
He lost his sight totally at age 11 due to Glaucoma. He finds that running gives him a great sense of freedom and a good release for daily stress. He is excited about competing in the 2019 race and exchanging running stories with the over 70 blind athletes expected at CIM this year.
