We, the 2021 Human Rights Class at Pharos Academy Charter School in the Bronx, are invested in addressing food insecurity due to Covid-19 in the Bronx. Our charity partner, Food Bank NYC, mirrors our values of “community survival, empowerment, and dignity” through continued food nutrition programs and food deliveries. Jems, a team member, connects to Food Bank NYC’s mission to help those in need, “the charity we chose is important because New York City was one of the most impacted places by covid. The Bronx specifically has the highest poverty rates in the city. The charity allows my team to support neighbors or anyone that may be fighting food insecurity due to covid. This is something we should all support because as residents of New York’s poorest borough we want to support a cause that helps people we may know.” Another team member, Tamya, added on “this charity is important because not only is it helping supply food for people in need, but providing an emergency plan for people during uncertain times like this, dealing with COVID.” Serving the Bronx is close to our hearts, and Deborah, the team member who first discovered Food Bank NYC closed out by saying “it is something that is very meaningful to them but for us also.” Any amount of money is accepted through our GoFundMe; all is appreciated. We ensure that all the money we receive will be used towards helping families get access to food and to support these families during these tough times.
