Star Kids Scholarship Program was founded in 2000 by Dr. Tim Flanigan, an infectious disease physician. While treating incarcerated patients, Tim became very aware of the need for a program to help break the cycle of substance abuse and incarceration. He realized that supplying quality education and support for children, who have a parent with a history of incarceration and/or severe substance abuse, would increase their chance of graduating from high school and becoming independent, productive and self-sufficient members of their community. Star Kids provides tuition aid to effective non-public schools, along with funding for tutoring, mentoring, after-school programs and summer camps for high-risk, low-income children to help them succeed academically. Students are usually enrolled in the program between kindergarten and 4th grade. The goal of the program is for each child to graduate from high school. As of June 2018, Newport/Fall River Star Kids has a 93% graduation rate and 91.5% of our graduates have gone on to post-secondary education. Our program is working!
