Who am I?
My name is Auria, I came to University of Maine, Farmington in 2012 as an exchange student from France. In the fall of 2013, I moved to Mount Desert Island, Maine, home of the gorgeous Acadia National Park. Once the snow melted and I had survived my second winter in Maine I started volunteering at Willowind Therapeutic Riding Center and have been there ever since. Willowind is a small non-profit organization that provides a year-round equine-assisted service to children and adults with mental and physical disabilities. In 2017, I became a U.S. citizen and my journey as a recent citizen is taking me cross-country on the southern route by bike. I will cross 8 states, bike 3042 miles from the West coast to the East coast and sleep in a tent for 2 months.
What is “Pedal 4 Power”?
“Pedal 4 Power” is not just a personal discovery and learning more about my adoptive country; it is also a fundraising journey to bring solar energy to Willowind’s farm. The Center would like to install solar panels to power the barn, indoor riding arena and tackroom. The total cost of this installation is estimated at $16,000. The “Pedal 4 Power” campaign’s $8,000 goal will be matched by donations from our Annual Summer Fundraising Event.
The 2 main goals of “Pedal 4 Power” fundraising journey are the following:
1. To raise awareness for Willowind’s services and more generally for the benefit of equine-assisted therapy for mental and physical health.
2. To help Willowind towards sustainability and by doing so, contributing to develop our local community’s environmental commitment.
During my bike journey, I will cross 8 states. The fundraising goal of $8000 means raising $1000 per state crossed; will you help me make Willowind a greener place?
The money raised will not only allow Willowind to install solar panels on the barn, but will take a step in the direction of a better future for the next generation. We will be a local leader by participating in the state of Maine’s efforts to create renewable energy and providing clean energy jobs, while fighting climate change!
