This year, the first residential treatment campus for girls who have been sexually exploited will open its doors. Pearl Haven will be a safe place where survivors can heal.
What is Pearl Haven?
Pearl Haven is Ho'ōla Nā Pua’s residential treatment campus for girls who have been sex trafficked. It is designed as a place to heal and help these girls rediscover hope and a vision for their future. The first of its kind in the heart of the Pacific, Pearl Haven is being built by YOU, our partners, for exploited youth who need this level of comprehensive rehabilitative care.
Pearl Haven’s doors need to open by April 2021, funding dependent. Exploited girls ages 11-17, who have experienced the most horrific abuse of sexual exploitation, are in dire need of this level of treatment and care. It’s hard to believe, but this abuse happens every day, everywhere, to thousands of children. Their greatest need is a safe place to heal.
What was the Immediate Impact of Covid-19?
Ho'ōla Nā Pua was in its final phase of completion for Pearl Haven when COVID-19 changed the world’s reality and operating capacity. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, financing for the completion of Pearl Haven is 100% dependent on event fundraising, grants, and donors. The economic impact was felt immediately. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the number of vulnerable and displaced youth being trafficked. A direct result of mandated quarantines with an extraordinary number of youth spending time online. If Pearl Haven were open today, there would be a safe haven for sex-trafficked youth to heal, not only during this global pandemic, but in the ongoing pandemic of sex trafficking.
Instead of viewing COVID-19 as a setback, we want to really lean in. Take this time to come TOGETHER and complete the final phase. It starts with a simple ask of a $19 donation.
It may not seem like much, but it can make a world of difference. Together, we can solve this! Together, we can open Pearl Haven! We need your help to complete this life-saving project. It just takes one act of kindness to spread the #PearlHaven19Challenge. (Will you join us?)
Why do we need Pearl Haven?
Consider the story of a 15-year old girl looking for somewhere safe to sleep. There’s a homeless camp she stayed at for two nights the first time she ran away—maybe she could stay there again. She’s hungry, tired, and last night she didn’t sleep because she was afraid her backpack would be stolen. She’s alone with no family. A fight at home sent her running and she’s been labeled as a nuisance, disruptive, and a problem child. She meets a man who says he “loves” her. It’s the first time she’s felt seen and valued. The emotional bond she develops with this unhealthy perpetrator can be challenging to break without help. He is now her trafficker, forcing her to have sex for money with more than 20 men in just under a month. All of this is in exchange for subsistence that profits from her innocence.
For her and countless girls like her, Ho'ōla Nā Pua is working to build Pearl Haven. A safe and secure place of healing, designed to meet her unique needs through education, psychotherapy, medical care, nutrition, life-skill development and mentoring relationships, offering support during this time of transition from surviving to thriving.
Pearl Haven is that safe place.
At Pearl Haven, girls will live in a healthy environment where a clinically-trained community is fully committed to their renewal of mind, body, and spirit. She will have many opportunities for life-skill classes, educational platforms such as working towards a GED, and therapy that has been uniquely designed for her. Family therapy sessions will also be a vital piece in working toward reconciliation and healthy relationships. Her days will be filled with opportunities for empowerment, offering each girl the ability to regain a sense of personal worth, boundaries, and dignity, while developing the skills needed to successfully reintegrate into their families and community.
Programs at Pearl Haven are designed to:
> Reduce the likelihood she will be exploited again
> Develop independent decision making to maintain healthy lifestyles and positive family interactions
> Decrease high-risk and self-endangerment behaviors
> Provide opportunities for progressive academic performance
> Support opportunities for life-skill development, career planning, and job training
The Pearl Haven campus sits on 12 acres of serene land on the island of O`ahu. It is a 20,000 square foot facility which is currently being transformed from its abandoned ruin into a vibrant, modern, state-of-the-art, residential treatment campus for commercially-exploited girls in Hawaii. Our vision is to provide youth who have been victimized through sexual exploitation with a path to transformation and healing.
