Foster care. The thought of children growing up without parents is sad enough. How heart-wrenching to think that some of these kids bounce from one foster home to the next for years, maybe their entire lives. It’s pretty hard for many of us to even picture this kind of life. Yet for these kids, it’s all too real.
After growing up without a family, imagine one day being told that you’ve aged out of the system and you have no place to go. You may be given some cash, maybe a recommendation on housing and then... you're on your own. You have no home, no parents to support and help you, no furniture, no housewares. How do you even get a refrigerator, plates, towels? How do you get a bank account, turn on the electricity, pay for the apartment, furnish it? Imagine having to figure all of this out without family/friends to support and help you? How hard would it have been to do all of things completely on your own?
Think back to the day you got your own place for the first time. How exciting it was to find an apartment, furnish it, get everything set up! How did it make you feel? It probably was a little scary, but also AWESOME to have your own space, with your own bed, couch, kitchen. How would this experience have changed if it was just an empty apartment, because all you could afford for now - while you work and go to school and maybe even take care of your kiddos - is a mattress.
A Sense of Home helps aged-out foster youth create a HOME. Not just a place for them to put their head down at night, but a space that is their own; that provides them a launch pad for their next chapter in life; that inspires them to chase after their dreams. Your kind donation will go towards creating a home for one of 12 mothers who’ve aged out of foster care and her children.
Thank you from the PDR4ASOH team, A Sense of Home, and all the aged-out foster youth that will benefit from your kind donation.
