The Greater New Haven Latinx community is frontline in this crisis. Mass layoffs in the restaurant and service industries have left many in the Latinx/Undocumented community unemployed and without an income, while others continue to risk exposure to feed their families and pay rent / utilities.
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont's executive order to grant renters a 60-day grace period for rent does not mean that rent is cancelled. BACK RENT WILL STILL BE OWED AFTER THE GRACE PERIOD. Most families will not be able to pay thousands of dollars in back rent necessary to be current.
As part of our COVID-19 Community Disaster Response, Junta has initiated a Pay Rent Fund / Fondo Pa’ Pagar La Renta, to alleviate the financial stress of Latinx/Undocumented families in this time of crisis.
How will the Funds be dispersed?
Junta will connect with individuals and families in need to make direct rent payments to their landlord.
Here’s how you can help
If you are in a position to contribute and have the means to take action, we hope you will donate today. Please consider donating a portion or all of your stimulus check to this cause, as many of our families, particularly those that are undocumented or of mixed-status, will not receive a stimulus payment from the government.
No dollar amount is too small.
Why we’re poised to do this work
Junta is the oldest Latinx, community-based 501c3 nonprofit organization in New Haven, CT. Junta is a multi-service agency providing direct services to the New Haven community for over 50 years. Following Hurricane Maria in 2017, Junta was at the frontline, helping resettle displaced families from Puerto Rico. Alongside our community partners, Junta disseminated approximately $15,000 of rent assistance in the form of security deposits to help displaced families attain their first rental unit in New Haven. As part of our COVID-19 Community Disaster Response, Junta is continuing to provide case management and immigration services to Latinx/Undocumented households. Additionally, we launched a Diaper Delivery Service to bring diapers to families in need.
Together with your help, we look forward to continuing to serve our community in this time of need.
