On Thursday, January 16, 2020, Oxford Middle School teachers Josh Smokovitz and Jason Cady will pull an all-nighter, camping out on the Oxford Middle School rooftop as the consequence of an incentive with their students to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The event will be broadcast live on Youtube beginning at 8 pm and running throughout the night until students return for school Friday morning: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKRHvbj-LjUkHZOl9KCISXA. It is the second year these teachers have landed on the roof for a night in January. Last year students met the challenge Smokovitz and Cady proposed when raising money for suicide awareness. The duo’s 2019 Youtube broadcast was viewed by over 125,000 people from all over the globe, generating stories on Reddit and Buzzfeed.
In December, students voted to support and raise funds for the American Cancer Society. During the Oxford Middle School Giving Week in December, the students participated in Penny Wars that took place 10 minutes of each day. As additional motivation, Mr. Smokovitz and Mr. Cady promised their students if their class alliance raised the most money over all other classroom partnerships, they would camp out on the roof. Oxford Middle School students raised $7,510.14 in total, with $1,757.55 collected by the students from Smokovitz and Cady’s classrooms. It is the second year these teachers have made this bet, and the second year they will bundle up to make good on their promise. Last year, throughout their camp out, Cady and Smokovitz were encouraged by hundreds of visitors from around the Oxford community. Many came bearing gifts of warm drinks and snacks that the two hauled up in a milk crate rigged with a rope pulley. This year, Smokovitz and Cady have arranged for school administrators, teachers, and special guests from around the district to help entertain their online audiences. Some are planning to break out their musical talents, while others plan to read bedtime stories to the young student listeners. Smokovitz and Cady plan to discuss with guests what the American Cancer Society cause means to them and celebrate the generosity and kind hearts of Oxford’s students, staff, and community. In the past five years, Oxford Middle School has raised over $36K for charities through their Giving Week Penny Wars️, making a positive difference in our world one penny at a time.
