Children fall through the cracks of our social fabric. I know, because after teaching in the heart of Appalachia and the surrounding outskirts for ten years, I have witnessed this devastating truth firsthand. Our Appalachian children struggle with parents or family members who have Substance Use Disorders, the effects of poverty and decrease in opportunity. Curious Kiddos Educational Resources Inc. has been founded to help solve the problem by publishing a book series titled Annie’s Appalachian Adventures and creating subsequent programs. Our books will aid in a child’s healing process by helping them understand complicated issues in a simple to understand language and providing the steps towards forming resiliency. Each book will end with a coping skill kids can use in their lives.
Our overall goal is to print The Letter which is the first book in a series. This first campaign is to raise funding for the book preivew. The book preview will be posted to our website by mid August for your viewing.
The Letter was designed to help children grasp the idea of substance abuse disorder as an illness while overcoming their personal veils of shame and guilt. In the book Annie receives a letter from her mother who is living in a rehabilitation center, due to her addiction, while Annie resides with her grandparents. Annie develops courage from her mother's choice to seek help and in turn finds help for her issues. Counselors have referred to this book as a “strength based book” that helps a child process complicated feelings, form resiliency, and seek a trusted adult for help.
