Dear Family of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
In these unprecedented and challenging times, where our community is separated and we cannot come together for mass, it brings me great sadness to see even emptier pews on Sunday. We must all heed the advice of medical professionals and not gather in groups and while we may seem "fine" we do not realize the danger we could pose to one another. Many of our spiritual events have been canceled, such as St Joseph, others seem to be up in the air and uncertain like Holy Week and Easter. These events have helped us, sustained us both spiritually and financially, and given the parish purpose to continue the beautiful devotions and traditions.
This past weekend (March 14/15) we have only collected around $500.00. To operate the parish between utilities (electric, gas, water), office supplies/needs (internet,paper/envelopes, printing, stamps, phone), church supplies (wine, water, candles, incense, communion hosts), other expenses (salaries and healthcare) the parish requires roughly $4985.00.
In these difficult times we must work together. This year, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel will celebrate 130 years of ministering to the City of Newark and surrounding areas. Many of you have special connections to OLMC for many generations and others have joined our family recently. Some of you live near by and some now live far away. We are now counting on all 1,114+of you who follow us through Facebook and other means to contribute as best you can and as frequent as you can. While rough times may lie ahead for many of us, please do not forget your parish who is here for you and despite everything keeps her doors open.
If you wish, you can still mail your envelopes and forego the "GoFundMe" , if you give through "ParishGiving" also great, if you do niether, remember that this is a great means, there is no gift too great or too small. Any donation that you give is tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law (tax forms will be provided). His Eminence, Cardinal Tobin has issued the following assistance below my letter which I hope you all will read attentively.
Above all, please "like, share, comment" on our mass posts and share them with your family and friends with a promise that when this pandemic has passed us, we will see you all visit our beautiful church once more.
In union of prayers, as the Italians say, "ce la faremo", we will make it,
The Archdiocese of Newark
Welcome. The Archdiocese of Newark is coordinating with the team at GoFundMe to provide one online location for the faithful to support the critical needs of their own parish (through this page) or other parish communities (through the Parishes in Need fund). The faithful may also contribute through their usual channels (e.g., envelopes, other online giving, the Annual Appeal).
Please consider a tax-deductible contribution to your parish on the parish’s GoFundMe page, or to the Parishes in Need fund, which will be used to conduct outreach to those in need and support those communities struggling to continue to pay their employees and church utility bills through this crisis. Contributions raised through the parish GoFundMe page will benefit that parish.
Cardinal Tobin has waived the usual archdiocesan assessment for contributions raised through this initiative. GoFundMe does not charge a platform fee (0%). There is a 0% platform fee and only an industry-standard payment processing fee of 1.9% + $0.30 per donation. If a charity receives a donation of $100, they will net $97.80. Donors will also have the option to tip GoFundMe Charity to support their continued business.
Thank you for your generosity to your parish and to those parish communities unable to meet their critical needs alone.
