This year would have been the 117th anniversary feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we have had to cancel. Since its inception, this is only the second time the feast has been cancelled, the first being during World WarII when most of the members were serving in the military. Steeped in tradition, the feast brings together generations of families and neighbors for ggod food, good entertainment and good times. Since this is the only fundraiser we have, the cancellation brings about financial hardship for the funding we require to maintain the shrine and pay our day-to-day bills. The shrine, built by Italian immigrants in the 1930's, is listed on the National and State registry of historic places. It is a vivid example of Italian-American folk art, made of concrete and stone , laid out in serpentine fashion and represents a deep-seated tradition of religious activity. While churches are closed, many people visit the shrine for peace, solitude and prayer. Any amount that you can give is greatly apprecciated. All donations are tax deductible. We will be having a mass on July 16 at 11:00am at St. Joseph's Church on Tompkins Avenue. After mass, there will be a gathering at Mount Carmel Shrine, 36 Amity Street. Masks and social distancing required. We are hoping to make enough money to keep us afloat so that we can have a great feast next year. Thank you for helping us.
