Our dog is special...
We know, we know, ALL dogs are special but our dog is different and not just because he's made out of metal and 162 years old. If you have ever been to Frederick, MD, you have passed the metal dog that guards the entrance to the Federated Charities building on Market Street. You may have thought it was kind of cool or maybe wondered what it's doing there but not thought too much more about it. But he stands for something in our community. His name is Charity.
He stands for the man who walks into our building needing to see a doctor. He stands for the woman who needs legal help when she was evicted. He stands for the child who needs a mental health provider but can't afford to pay for one. He stands for all of us even when we don't think we need any of the services provided by one of our partnering nonprofits. His name is Charity.
You might have noticed that his paws are cracked and broken and his paint is chipped in some places. After all these years of faithful service, he is in need of a visit to the vet (or the historic restoration company in our case). We are a nonprofit ourselves and these repairs were not in our budget, espeicially this year, but we know how important he is as a symbol of our work and the work of the other charitable organizations we support every day. His name is Charity.
The family who placed him thought he was special...perhaps a pet, perhaps just a decoration. He has graced our building since 1858 when the they purchased him for $45 and put him on the front steps. He is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever so he's used to the cold. He's never gotten used to his head being broken off or his tail stolen as a prank but each time we have repaired him and taken steps to protect him but now he's in need of some major repairs (remember, he's 1,134 in dog years) to be here for the men, women and families who walk past him on holidays when he's dressed up or when he's covered with snow or when it's raining. He's been here for us for all these years...now we are asking you to be here for him.
When you give through this campaign, we will be able to leverage your money in a match to pay for the $12,500 total "vet" bill. We appreciate any help you can give. His name is Charity.
He is part of what makes our community and our organization special. Thank you for donating to help with his restoration.
