One of our partner organizations, NISGUA, just began their big fundraising campaign, May Match! We are proud to support NISGUA and the work they do as international accompaniers, providing physical accompaniment to Guatemalan activists threatened by criminalization and violence. In 2018, 26 human rights defenders were killed in Guatemala, a 136% increase from the number killed in 2017 according to Front Line Defenders. This context makes the work that NISGUA does, providing international accompaniment to Guatemalan human rights and land defenders who request it, all the more important. But NISGUA needs grassroots donors to make their work happen. From now until May 31, all donations will be matched dollar for dollar. We are proud that many former OSSGUA members have worked as NISGUA accompaniers, heeding the call for an international presence and helping to ensure safety for Guatemalan activists and organizations to carry out their work for land defense and for justice for crimes of the past. Please join us in supporting this important work!
About NISGUA: The Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) works in the U.S. and Guatemala to strengthen the global movement for justice, human dignity, and respect for the Earth. Formed in 1981, at the height of Guatemala’s Internal Armed Conflict, NISGUA’s network today is comprised of thousands of people across the U.S. who demand justice, challenge corporate-led development, and push to change current U.S. policies. Using strategies that include international human rights accompaniment, digital organizing and communications, horizontal exchange, rapid response activism and advocacy, and campaigns, NISGUA builds mutually beneficial, cross-border networks to support social and environmental activists in Guatemala.
