Dear Benevolent Donors,
The Los Angeles Chapter of Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief (SOAR) is proud to announce a transformational fundraising campaign designed to enhance the well-being of the children of Zatik Child Assistance Center in Yerevan, Armenia. Our goal for the 2020 Play Project is to raise $15,000 undertaking to build an inclusive playground for children with disabilities. By incorporating inclusive design, the goal is to provide a fun yet accessible playground for children with varying disabilities. Play is an essential component of a child’s development. This project will encourage children to interact with their peers to help reduce the social stigmas associated with disabilities and to promote a culture of celebration.
For the children of Zatik Child Assistance Center, having an opportunity to play outside will foster a supportive and healing environment. This is particularly vital for children who are already marginalized and at a high disadvantage due to lack of resources. An accessible playground will allow children to feel a sense of belonging, which we hope will extend beyond the confines of the facility and into our great homeland of Armenia for an Orphanage in Yerevan, Armenia.
Why is play important for children?
-There is strong research that supports the connection between brain development and outdoor play.
-Creates a healing and supportive environment for children who are already at a high disadvantage being they have the lack of resources.
-The children in orphanages need the opportunity and exposure to participate in outdoor play and physical activity.
-Children develop gross motor skills (running, jumping, walking), fine motor development, emotional regulation, organization of behavior and attention, social interaction. In addition, outdoor playgrounds provide children with the opportunity for children to make sense of and organize the sensory information (tactile, proprioceptive, olfactory, visual, vestibular, auditory) that comes at them through their senses.
What are the benefits of an Inclusion playground?
-An inclusion playground will allow children with a disability to be able to access the playground.
-It will allow children of all abilities the opportunity to play with each other and promote peer interaction.
-Children can be positive role models for learning, communication, and modeling appropriate behaviors.
-Children with special needs will provide a typical child the opportunity to recognize that people come with varying strengths and abilities.
-Children with special needs have the ability to learn and develop at their own pace with the right resources and opportunities to play.
-Inclusion programs allow all children to feel a sense of belonging. it also teaches children to learn and appreciate diversity in others.
