Offering accessible organic recycling options for Minneapolis residents in apartments and condos!
In 2017, one Minneapolis renter began a journey to create expanded organics recycling access. This meant setting up a community-led, community-funded organics recycling drop-off site at the Wedge Co-op. Every year since then, we have expanded to a new neighborhood, increasing the number of neighbors who can now shift their organic food scraps and waste into a composting waste stream. Today, between 1,500 and 2,000 neighbors have easy access that didn't previously.
Whittier, Lowry Hill East, Lyndale, Loring Park: these drop-off sites have been a free service thanks to volunteeer oversight and the generous donations of neighborhood groups and individual donors.
It costs between $500 and $1,000 to keep one community drop-off site open for a year. $18 a month for the first bin, then $9 for each additional bin (= more access). So most of that cost goes to the hauling with a small additional amount going to signage, locks (to prevent contamination), and outreach. As 2021 is kicking off, we have a goal of covering the cost of funding the existing sites: This is budgeted at $5000.
Our group hopes to continue to provide organics recycling access throughout the city and to empower neighbors to take on environmental stewardship roles that help us connect to each other. If we raise *more* than $5,000, all additional money will go toward launching new drop-off sites throughout Minneapolis, furthering access!
Thank you so so much for your consideration and your support! We're excited to see what we can do together next.
