Meet Orchid. She's the bravest kitten you'll ever meet. We don't know much about her past, only that she was found abandoned in a backyard - feral and seemingly paralyzed in her hind end. The local shelter was unable to provide her with the care she needed so they reached out for help. Kitty Bungalow agreed to take her, not knowing if she would ever walk again. When she arrived at Kitty Bungalow, some swear they heard the faint sounds of purrs through her hissy bravado and tough as nails attitude.
When Orchid came to Kitty Bungalow - she was beautiful and fragile, just like her namesake. Her medical needs were immediate and severe. After her first veterinary visit, they determined she has congenital spinal deformities, giving her torso a compact look and something she will always live with. She also had a severe traumatic injury to her back legs, which was caused by either a car or a boot - the part of her story that we will never know. Due to some congenital heart defects, it was unclear if she was stable enough to handle surgery. A veterinary cardiologist performed an EKG and echocardiogram. Once cleared for surgery, Orchid received a bilateral FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) and we all held our breath that she would regain her mobility.
Between laser therapy, acupuncture, and daily physical therapy, Orchid is beginning to walk again. Her feral tendencies have since melted away, as she moved away from fear and towards gratitude in the form of the loudest purrs that fill our rescue's classrooms. She has brought us together as a team, and an organization, reminding the staff and volunteers daily about why we do the work we do.
But Orchid's story doesn't end here. It's been a month, and she still has a long way to go. She is as determined as we are for her to walk again. As our volunteers frequently hashtag on social media, #GoOrchidGo. She is an inspiration, and deserves every chance at her best life - something she would have never gotten if it weren’t for YOU, our supporters.
Unfortunately, Orchid is not alone. She is only one of the thousands of feral kittens who deserve a chance at their best life. This is where Kitty Bungalow comes in, taking undersocialized kittens #fromhisstohome regardless of the ailments we encounter. Please consider giving a tax deductible donation to Orchid’s Fund this Holiday Season. This fund was set up to provide feral kittens with the care they need in order to thrive.
We are hoping to reach $10,000 by the end of 2019, so that we can start 2020 off with our best paw forward. We are also in great need of a kitten incubator and an autoclave, which are essential to provide the highest level of care to our vulnerable population. Please view these items on our Amazon Wishlist if you’re interested in directly gifting one to Kitty Bungalow.
On behalf of Kitty Bungalow students, we thank YOU - the donors, adopters, volunteers, self trappers, and community partners - who make everything possible.
