Have you tried a ripe peach fresh off the tree, with juice dripping off your chin? How about a ripe persimmon or blackberry? What if there were a place right down the street where you could pick fruit right off the tree free of charge?
Would you like an oasis of calm amid your busy, overstressed world, surrounded by vibrant plant and animal life? Would you like to do something to better our world, something that will last for generations?
We have been working quietly for several years to acquire the property at 4501-4509 S. Third St., across from the Thornton’s, to plant a public orchard. It will include fruit trees, a berry patch, pollinator garden and more. We have already planted a flower garden and several pecan trees which will one day shade a hot roadway and provide bountiful pecans. The site has been surveyed and permission obtained from the neighboring homeowners. Our next step is to get an easement agreement with the property owner next door so we can use her driveway for access. That means we need another survey of her driveway and a lawyer to draw up the agreement. This will cost approximately $600, so it is time to fundraiser again
Can you help us out? This is an all-volunteer effort and every dollar raised goes directly toward the project.
