How are our Treasured Seniors being Affected?
The rapid growth of Charlotte’s elderly population has heightened concerns about the spread of the coronavirus as the city, state, and country, look for ways to slow the pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists “older adults” as those “at higher risk for more severe complications from COVID-19.”
For seniors, the terrifying statistic is that seven of the nine North Carolinians to die of the disease, as of Wednesday morning, were ages 65 or above. According to the CDC, in the U.S. the death rate is 2.7% for COVID-19 patients ages 65-74. For patients 75-84, the rate is 4.3%, and it shoots up to 10.4% for people 85 and older. While the virus is still new and information is rapidly changing, that death rate is consistent with global figures that show a substantially higher death rate for the elderly.
