OWL’s summer programs are underfunded for offsite activities. It makes the experience more engaging and enriching if we can expand the onsite development lessons with offsite excursions to local museums. It also helps keep everyone engaged and give them experiences they may otherwise not have the opportunity to have. We currently have 130 students enrolled across 5 locations. Each location only has enough money for 1 excursion every 2 weeks during summer camp. We are hoping to raise and additional $2,000 in the next month, so that we can add an additional offsite activity for each of the locations. Your generous support will go to ensure these children have a wonderful summer while learning valuable life skills and educational lessons along the way.
Who We Are
OpenWorld Learning (OWL) is a Denver-based, independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that supports children’s school success by tapping the power of digital technology and peer teaching to develop leadership and ignite a love of learning. OWL provides a fun and challenging after-school educational program centered on teaching advanced computer technology to Denver area students. We aim to offer equal opportunity by offering after-school and summer programs for Title I, 3rd – 8th graders that help them develop digital literacy skills. Our program is a fun and safe way for these students to learn computer technology through projects and peer teaching. We provide these students with real-world learning opportunities they may otherwise not have access to, and our programs are proven to improve school attendance and standardized test scores, especially in math.
The summer program
OWL’s summer programs offer an immersive Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), leadership, and community-building experience to students aged 7-12 at local schools. Every day, OWL offers a healthy mix of physical activities, team-building exercises, reading time, student-designed computer projects, guided support from adult technology mentors and peer leaders, and field trips to local universities and prominent science and technology companies. Each week teaches students different science and advanced technology tools such as animation, computer programming, digital photography, and robotics, and ends with student-led presentations of their projects.
Student learning is self-paced and customized, equipping students with essential technology and life skills. Students who continue with the afterschool program have a chance to earn their own computers for use at home. OWL embeds all of these components in the summer program because OWL believes in a whole-child approach that challenges students intellectually and also supports a healthy lifestyle.
OWL’s summer programs are designed to engage students during the summer months when the learning gap often increases for low-income students.
Testimonials
‘I am a huge believer in the OWL program and their technology and leadership programs – they do amazing things. However it became personal when my daughter was able to attend OWL’s summer camp last year. She loved everything about it and was only upset because she only attended 1 week! This year she’s looking forward to attending again and can’t wait. This camp is fun for any kid, there’s so much to learn and do. I can’t say enough.’

‘OWL is a great organization for providing an opportunity during the summer for those with the capability, but lacking access to learn and embrace different types of technology. My daughter attended one of the summer camps for two years – and she discovered how to create animation – which the following fall, her skills came in handy for a project at school using the same animation software. Participants are exposed to all aspects of an urban college campus rigor – while on the Auraria Campus. They allow time for campers to have fun too. OWL summer camp schedule (full-day) was accommodating for working single parents.’
