California Tomato Season has arrived! Did you know that 90% of the United States’ processing tomatoes are grown right here in our glorious state? Harvesting delicious, nutritious heirloom tomatoes is a California tradition. It’s also a time-sensitive task – and the time is right now.
That’s why we are asking for your help to secure this premium local harvest and deliver it to our underserved communities in need. Our harvests are hyper-local, so is our effort. Here are the facts on the ground: restaurants and venues aren’t buying at the rate they were last year, and heirlooms have a shelf life of just a few days.
It takes $2000 to cover the costs of growing and harvesting 1 ton of these antioxidant-and-vitamin-rich tomatoes and pay a driver to transport them. Organically-grown, heirloom tomatoes can go for up to $5 at the market. So we are calling on 200 people to donate $10 dollars each. Together, we can secure this harvest and bring beautiful, seasonal, super-Californian fruits to our friends and neighbors experiencing hunger in Los Angeles.
Join the mission!
COVID-19 has devastated our food distribution networks and thrown markets into turmoil. Food that doesn’t have a buyer is being destroyed. Together, we can keep the food cycle turning by supporting local farms and bringing fresh produce to our community. 100% of the funds raised go directly to harvesting, packing, transporting, and delivering whole, nutritious food to people in need.
WHO WE ARE
Farm2People was formed in April 2020 in response to the Covid-19 crisis. It is a volunteer-lead, grassroots effort, which helps connect farmers to food relief agencies, bringing fresh, nutritious food to people in need.
We help farmers make their excess supply visible to food providers through an open-source platform. This is a long term project, activating around the values of transparency, empowerment, and food rescue.
