This June marks ten years ago that our amazingly loving Mama unexpectedly passed away. Although the exact cause of her death is unknown, it is suspected to have been a sudden heart attack. In celebration and memory of her life, I created a fundraiser through the American Heart Association: One HEART. Our endlessly thoughtful and creative friend, Ebony Cauley, created the logo and name for event. I think it is deeply fitting and meaingful. Not only am I one with my mother and sister, but all of us are one. We have all experienced suffering and loss but are also connected by the equally powerful forces of healing and love.
If donating feels right to you, any amount is appreciated. For every $100.00 donated, I and any other family/friends who desire, pledge to walk/run one mile in our mom's honor. Donations benefit the Amerian Heart Association and support research and programs to advance heart health, education, and help people live long and healthy lives. Heart.org, the American Heart Association's website, has many accesible articles covering the importance of caring for our hearts, minds, and bodies. From learning about the prevelance of heart disease in women, to the connection between mental health and heart health, the website teaches me new things and reminds me of the importance of taking good care of myself in mind, body, and spirit.
If donating does not feel right to you or is not something you are able to do, you could wear red and walk/run during the month of June (wherever you may be!) in honor of Mama, heart health, and life. To me, everytime I care for my health - whether it be physically, mentally, or spiritually - it honors my mother and her life. I ask myself the question David Kessler poses: "What would best honor the years they didn't get?" I hope that this fundraiser and celebration of life is one avenue through which we may continue to honor our incredible mother.
