Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery that occurs around the world. It includes both labor and sex trafficking, and is is broadly defined as the “obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion” (Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000). Not only does this take place in our country, but it is occurring in record numbers right here in Ohio. In fact, Ohio is ranked as the fourth highest state in the nation for human trafficking, with 365 cases reported last year in Ohio alone (NHTH). Human trafficking is an epidemic that demands our attention.
Through the One Grey Outfit Project, we, at Bowling Green State University are striving to raise money and awareness to fight human trafficking. From October 15th- November 15th, we pledge to wear the same grey outfit every day to serve as a reminder of the oppression people face when they are trafficked. By wearing the same piece of clothing for thirty days, we are challenging ourselves to look deeper into the issues people who are trafficked face, which includes not being provided with the freedom to make decisions like the ones that we take for granted on a daily basis.
Throughout the month we are also raising money for RISE (a branch of the salvation army) which is an organization based locally in Toledo, Ohio. RISE improves the physical and emotional well-being of those who have experienced prostitution and/or human trafficking by using research based service approaches and offering comprehensive case management to survivors in the Toledo area. As we pledge to wear the same grey outfit for thirty days to help ourselves and our community become more aware of human trafficking, we challenge you to do the same. Whether you donate to RISE through this fundraising page, participate in Ohio’s awareness campaign and share the National Human Trafficking Hotline number found below, or even consider wearing the same grey outfit for the next thirty days right along with us, we would greatly appreciate your help and support in fighting human trafficking in Ohio and around the world.
