This December, I'll be traveling to Kenya and volunteering through the Village Cooperative. They have a group called the Live Long Self Help Women’s Group, which consists of 45 women living in Geera Village on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya. Many of these women have been widowed due to HIV/AIDS, as well as many other diseases so need all the help they can get as they raise their families on their own.
These incredibly strong, resilient, and resourceful women work hard to care for their families and improve the quality of living for their entire village. For years, they have volunteered at the primary school where their children attend, run organic gardens, operated a community center, and have other small businesses like a tailoring shop and a party rental/catering business. They are willing to work hard, but often life’s obstacles get in the way.
I am fundraising for the holidays to provide each woman with the essentials she needs for several months - cooking oils, rice, tea, sugar, ugali mix, and some goodies for the new year. This ensures that her family will eat and allows her to focus on her work and earning an income. Please help as you can, I would (and I'm sure the women of Mbita) would greatly appreciate it.
