Help the Old Town San Diego Chamber of Commerce preserve the precious historic resources that we all enjoy celebrating. The Old Town Chamber is dedicated to working with all of the stakeholders in the Historic Old Town community.
Did you know that the Old Town San Diego Chamber of Commerce is promoting the new exhibit in the Old Town State Park which is dedicated to our first people, the Kumeyaay that have been here for at least 10,000 years, and the nearly 500 businesses within the Business Improvement District, and that it is the mission of the the Old Town Chamber to promote accurate historic interpretation and fun!
Did you know that the Mormon Battalion conscripts marched thousands of miles on foot to fight in the battle for California and when they arrived in Old Town San Diego in 1847 the battle was over, so they busied themselves building wells, schools and other buildings in Old Town and that this is all celebrated at the Mormon Battalion Visitor Center on Juan Street? Did you know that when the Battalion members volunteered Brigham Young promised they would never be forgotten, and to this day they are remembered in Old Town San Diego?
Did you know that Native American Antonio Garra was executed by Firing Squad in 1872 at the El Campo Santo on San Diego Avenue in Old Town for rebelling against the local authorities because of a perceived taxation of the Native American population without representation, and an ensuing revolt?
Did you know that the only African American Museum in San Diego County is located in Old Town on Congress Street?
Old Town San Diego’s many historic resources and opportunities for visitors to experience our rich history must be promoted! We are the site of the first Alta California Mission established by Saint Junipero Serra in 1769. Old Town San Diego is home to a number of other highly significant historic sites and museums. The non-profit Old Town Chamber is totally dedicated to providing visitor services including free parking and a Visitor Information Center open 7 days a week.
