Open Hands Community Project (OHCP) was launched in September 2015 to help kids in fragile communities in South Africa graduate high school. Giving them the opportunity to seek higher education or enter the workforce.
Initially run as an after school program only, OHCP has quickly grown into a full time high school requiring its own building in order to continue to grow. Many of the students who attend Open Hands Community Project's, Daybreak Academy, would never have the opportunity or be able to afford, a quality education. Thus, continuing the vicious cycle of poverty that affects so many South Africans. 62% of children currently live below the poverty line. Many of their families struggle to provide very basic needs for their families. There is just no option or hope to give their children a quality education which is why OHCP is seeking to bridge the gap. OHCP graduated their first student in 2019 and has another on track to graduate before the end of this year.
Despite a growing program that has been forced to turn students away due to space constraints, DayBreak Academy has been notified that their building is being sold and will no longer be available to them. They have an emergent need to buy a new building that will allow their program to continue to grow and keep their current students onsite and in school for the remainder of this school year.
A new property that will suit the needs of the school will cost approximately $250,000 and require a $24,000 down payment. They have found a property that is exactly what they need. It is close to where the students live, it has accommodation for their family, a small house for the single mom who works for them, 9 classrooms, an office, room for teens who need a place to stay, room to host teams and camps, 1 acre of land for a school vegetable garden, room for the chickens and so much potential to grow.
The first $24,000 raised will be used immediately as a downpayment to allow the school to own their own property, where they can continue to grow the school and impact the lives of poverty stricken families in South Africa for years to come.
