Our family friend who was my mom’s lifelong friend passed away on May 17, 2017. She died of cancer. Her name was Karen. After she passed away my mom was led to a local charity called the YOLO Strong Foundation.
She said that being involved with this charity has given her a way to keep Karen's memory and spirit alive for her and for my brother and me. Karen was a very special person to me and I miss her so much. Today is her birthday. She would have been 52 years old.
Our family is trying to make a difference in the world and Karen is our inspiration.
YOLO stands for
It was formed in Oyster Bay 6 years ago by a group of moms’ who wanted to make a difference in the lives of sick children and their families.
Besides raising money for the charity, the moms also compete in obstacle course races to raise funds and awareness for local children battling illnesses and help children with special needs to gain access to much needed medical devices and technology. This year my brother and I participated in the race with our mom. The charity has grown from a team of 3 to over 100 members as of today and Kids are now getting involved too.
The charity raises money for the following not for profit organizations.
● – A preschool in Hicksville, NY for children undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
● - Provides iPads (with special software) for underprivileged non-communicative children with Autism
● - Assist a sick child and his/her family who are trying to overcome an unforeseen life changing circumstance. They can help pay bills like a mortgage payment.
● Provide medical devices for children with life threatening diseases who are medically fragile and chronically ill.
The money goes directly to the organizations listed above. Everyone who is part of YOLO is a volunteer.
Our goal is to have at least 90 members participate in spreading awareness and helping raise money for YOLO. We would like to raise at least $4,000 for the charities.
