On May 1st 2019, I was fortunate enough to be a full-time member of staff at HI4Y, living at Camp Vacamas. This was the best job I've ever had and ever will have. From the following day until May 31st 2019, I decided to take on a daily hike from the Pengilley apartments to Bald Rock with the aim of raising enough money to send a child to Camp Vacamas that summer.
Thanks to the amazing generosity of everyone who donated, we were able to raise enough to bring THREE children to camp from our Bronx after-school program, which was such a great thing and beyond my wildest expectations when I started the hikes.
This year, from my home in Scotland, I'm hoping you'll join me in raising as much money as we can for Camp Vacamas through a walk covering the distance from Port Authority to Camp Vacamas (36.3 miles/58.4km)!
Due to the current restrictions in the UK regarding the amount of time we should be spending out of the house each day, I'll be covering this distance over the course of 1 week, starting tomorrow, May 2nd.
The reason I wish to support camp this year is I think with the current situation we all find ourselves in, non-profits like HI4Y are likely to face many challenges during a time where the children they serve need them more than ever.
While I no longer work for HI4Y, I still have friends there who I'm in regular contact with and they've done an amazing job of re-inventing the after-school programs to offer classes and projects through Skype such as virtual STEM, dancing, games and they've even been hosting live round-ups through the HI4Y Facebook page. There's been children and their parents tuning in every day, enjoying having something fun to look forward to each day. I know they have a lot more planned and what better way to support them by raising some money and getting involved in a challenge.
As I take on part of the journey each day, I'll update you all on how far I've got and show you where I'd be if I was actually making the real journey from NYC to camp.
I'll nominate some of you along the way to do your own 5k, 10k or whatever you can and we'll see how much distance we can cover between us. Wouldn't it be great if we can get to camp and all the way back to Port Authority?
While I know we all have our own worries and concerns during this time, please don't forget about camp. They're 4 years away from the 100 year anniversary and how amazing would it be to meet up there in 2024 for a 100 year Camp Vacamas birthday party?!
Thanks again for your support. Please feel free to join in hiking and donate whatever you can to help.
