I am running this year for the 10,000 grandmothers and nearly 60,000 orphaned and vulnerable children my organization, Nyaka, is serving in Uganda. While I run for Nyaka in the 2019 New York City Marathon, a group of dedicated people in Nyaka village will be running too. We will run in solidarity to educate, empower, and transform communities for our children’s sake.
I founded Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project in my home village of Nyakagyezi in Southwest Uganda to help the orphaned children who had lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. Orphans go without many basic human needs including food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, and education. While extended families usually take care of orphaned children, the HIV/AIDS pandemic was so devastating that many children had no one to care for them. They had no hope of escaping poverty. For the past 18 years, I have been working to provide free education to these children along with textbooks, uniforms, shoes, nutritious meals, clean water, healthcare (which includes HIV/AIDS testing and treatment) and scholastic materials, everything they need to succeed. I have also created community programs and a Grandmother Program to help support and empower the women raising these children to escape poverty. We also merged EDJA Foundation into Nyaka in 2018. EDJA is working to end sexual and domestic violence.
