We are asking for donations to help raise funding for our nutrition and wellness programs. These programs play an essential role in helping to provide food security, nutrition education, health coaching, and a variety of wellness workshops to the communities we serve.
The key areas of program focus:
- Promoting healthy eating habits.
- Access to fresh organic produce and other healthy food options (we hold a healthy food distribution program 2 times a month where we distribute 500 + lbs of food at each distribution).
- Workshops in nutrition, wellness, expressive arts, and gardening (the youth learn how to grow and harvest produce).
- Nutrition & wellness education, counseling, and health coaching.
- Nutrition youth internships.
Berkeley Youth Alternatives serves at-risk youth ages 6 to 21 years old that are challenged by food and housing insecurity, trauma, and economic hardships throughout the California East Bay community. Our nutrition & wellness programs, youth internships and workshops focus on providing food security, nutrition education, promoting positive food and lifestyle choices, self-confidence, and positive self-expression. Our workshops support our youth emotionally, help in building resiliency, processing of internal conflicts and provide support in expressing themselves and communicating on diverse levels. We are committed to continuing to provide these programs and workshops but in order to do so, we need funding support.
Our nutrition & wellness workshops provide a holistic approach to nutrition, nutrition education, urban gardening, expressive arts and mindfulness exercises. Our organic urban garden and orchard host these fundamental workshops in an educational and relationship-driven environment. Our urban gardens inspire and promote healthy eating habits, provide access to fresh produce, environmental education and outdoor space for expressive arts and mindfulness workshops.
Our program encourages healthy eating by providing access to healthy food through monthly food distributions, nutrition and wellness workshops, and educations classes on the benefits of healthy nutrition and how to grow food. Our expressive arts workshops encourage youth to embrace creative expression by aiding in the processing of internal conflicts, advancing social skills and developing prosocial and positive communication skills. These workshops contribute to lowering anxiety and stress and assists in the building blocks for self-awareness. By using a child-centered approach to learning that embraces creativity, youth are given an opportunity to foster self-confidence, creative expression and compassionate communication.
For over 40 years Berkeley Youth Alternatives helps the children and families of our community by providing comprehensive services in a supportive and bias-free haven. We work to give a voice to the voiceless and to defend the poor. We work to change the educational system, the juvenile justice system, foster care system, and health care system in order to give the youth and their families opportunities to reach their full potential while helping to empower the next generation and repairing the damage done to our multiple populations.
We invite you to help play a role in contributing to our program's success by making a donation. I cannot express how important this work truly is. Please join me in making a contribution to help fund our nutrition, gardening and wellness programs at Berkeley Youth Alternatives (BYA). We are so thankful for any donations to support us in continuing the success of our programs!
Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
