In a region of the world where a family of 8 lives off $50 a year, and there is only 1 doctor for every 350,000 people, being malnourished is a part of every kid’s life – but Notre Dame Empower Through Health is committed to ensuring that isn’t their future. In recent months, we have seen our communities overwhelmed by economic and health-related challenges with the emergence of COVID-19. These effects are amplified in already overburdened communities including those in the Busoga region of Uganda. Children of this region are raised knowing food insecurity and early death is a possible future, and they must now accept a world where they are even more vulnerable than they were before. However, Notre Dame Empower Through Health hopes to help the Busoga region create a better future.
True to our name, empowerment is a central belief for Notre Dame ETH in our effort to provide an intervention that helps communities become self-sufficient so they have the capability of maintaining proper nutrition. Our strategies to reduce undernutrition and deficiencies in micronutrients in the Busoga Region include :
- Implementing a nutritional program that improves the nutritional value of the meals being consumed
- Building a community garden to create a sustainable source of nutritious foods
- Introducing a superfood to make micronutrients more accessible
We will work with the on site Empower Through Health team in a cross-continental collaboration to facilitate these interventions, which we hope to engage with in person in Summer 2021 - contingent on the conditions of the pandemic. Regardless of being physically present, our mission to cultivate hope and health in Basoga communities begins now, as no distance can keep us from helping another human.
We would sincerely appreciate your contribution to our journey, and we hope you and your family stay safe and joyful for the rest of the year.
