North Central WV Food Hub
We are a group of North Central WV farmers working collectively to build an aggregation and distribution hub in Weston, WV to serve the North Central WV region. We are partnering with an aggregation and distribution collective that is currently serving the state. The collective farmers have been granted a space in Weston that would afford us a 170 square foot walk in cooler. The walk-in cooler, built in this space, is the last piece of this puzzle to solve. We are hoping that we can all work together as a community to bring this goal to fruition.
Who We are:
Rt. 18 Farm Market: high quality naturally grown vegetable produce
Spotted Horse Farm: wild crafted herbal products
Smoke Camp Crafts: jams, jellies, teas, culinary spice blends
Nolan Farm: pasture/woodlot pigs, free range chickens and duck, rabbit
Camp Run Farm: delicious baked goods
Sweet Wind Farm: NON-GMO pastured poultry, NON-GMO free range eggs, rabbit, duck, venison, bone broth
Williams Windy Ridge Farm: rabbit, eggs, produce, fruit, jams and jellies
L&M Farm: chemical free produce, herbs, and herbal products
More to come and all are welcome!
This partnership will facilitate a broader market place by connecting multiple parts of the state, which is also advantageous to consumers. Consumers can place personal orders for pick up at the food hub once a week. Imagine being able to shop on a virtual farmers market for your family once a week and purchase foods from all over the state. You might get a head of lettuce from a farmer 20 minutes away and also get steaks from a farmer who is 100 miles away! Also, local restaurants can now order West Virginia products and source locally in the amounts that they need for their individual operations. All of this keeps our value chain geographically close and the quality of the products high. The implementation of this food hub will also allow our farmers to spend more time on their farms growing the local foods that we love by relieving their need to distribute and sell their own products; instead of sitting at 3-5 farmers markets per week for hours, farmers can get back to what they love doing- growing your food!
The North Central WV Food Hub is in need of financial support at the moment. We are getting all the pieces into place to make this possible but the hurdle we keep coming to is funding. We are trying to adapt a space in Weston into a cold storage cooler for the aggregation hub that will serve North Central WV.
We have compiled a materials list which you can find below. Any and all donations will help purchase these supplies, or you may purchase the supplies directly for us. Please contact Audra O’Dell at firstname.lastname@example.org before purchasing or donating supplies. We are asking for approximately $6,500 in funds for materials; all labor to build the walk-in cold storage area will be provided by community volunteers as well as the farmers who will be utilizing the space.
West Virginia Food and Farm Coalition is providing support for this project by accompanying this passionate group with partnership development, vision development, space accrual, and fiscal sponsorship. We recognize the value of the project and are working to build capacity within the communities we serve.
