ROCK THE BORDER, STOP THE WALL
This GoFundMe has transformed many times, as we raised money for our mural, then for Veterans that helped us repaint the mural, and now we continue to raise funds for our Border-wide Virtual Concert.
We truly cannot express how much time and effort has gone into what will be a truly magnificent display of artists against the wall letting you know that YOUR VOTE MATTERS! You can vote to stop the wall! All donations will be used to continue to cover costs of the mural, pay for associated costs of putting together this concert, and any additional funds will be saved for future actions. Remember SU VOTO ES SU VOZ!

Support Vets banding together to stop the wall
Today, Veterans United to Stop the Wall in Laredo, Texas, make their voices heard and let the people know that they protect our lives, our land, our water, our rights, our history. They do NOT support the wall.
LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) have joined these proud Veterans in their defense of our river and our home.
Donate to the event to help repurchase painting supplies to touch up our beautiful mural.
This event is for Veterans, their families and LULAC members to do painting maintenance on the street mural completed last month. We have a designated Covid safety officer to make sure everyone wears a mask and is socially distanced.
Our original message:
What's 30 feet wide and 450 feet long? The massive message we sent to the federal government this August to stop the border wall. We demand that the government invests in the real needs of border communities.
DEFUND THE WALL. FUND OUR FUTURE.
*This mural was completed over the weekend, but we are still looking to cover costs! Please consider donating, any amount is a huge help! Rio Grande International Study Center is a small non-profit that has been hit hard by Covid-19 and has been generous enough thus far to fiscally sponsor the No Border Wall Coalition.*
The Rio Grande International Study Center is a foundational member of the No Border Wall Laredo Coalition to stop the border wall.
Despite the rhetoric coming out of DC, the wall is not a done deal. Together we can stop it. We have a plan and are working together with local, state and federal officials. This creative action is our next step.
On July 27, the Laredo City Council voted unanimously to allow the Coalition to paint a “Defund the Wall” street mural on Victoria Street, directly in front of the federal courthouse.
This is part of our new “Defund the Wall, Fund our Future” initiative. The U.S. government has now awarded $564.5 million to out-of-state contractors to wall off Laredo’s entire riverfront with a concrete and steel prison wall (31 miles at $18.2 million per mile), a project that will carve a path of destruction through our community.
A wall is a waste of precious resources. It will NOT impact the drug trade. It will NOT stop migration. It diverts money from U.S. military projects that benefit U.S. military families. And it destroys an entire ecosystem that supports the only source of drinking water for Laredo and its sister city.
To understand what half a billion dollars looks like, we broke it down to show what these resources, if redirected, would do for our community:
· 1 single mile could plant 121,397 native trees in our city
· 1 single mile could also fund the salaries of 93 full-time college faculty for 2 years.
· Just 2 miles could replace the entire El Metro bus fleet with all electric vehicles.
· 3 miles could fund a major trauma center in Laredo for 3 years.
· 31 miles (the current total in this area) could fund 61 new elementary schools. It could place solar rooftops on 19,461 rooftops (more than 1/3 of all Laredo single family homes)
· 31 miles could fund a $3,000 pay raise for all teachers in the four Laredo, United, Zapata County, and Webb Consolidated school districts for 43 years.
We believe that it’s time that border communities take control of our future and be the ones to shape the funding priorities for our beautiful and dynamic part of the country. This street mural will send a clear message to the U.S. Government, and help us launch this larger campaign.
We have budgeted the cost of paint at $7,000 and the cost of supplies at $3,000. Help us meet our $10,000 goal and support all the volunteers that will be painting the mural.
Help give our border community a voice, and send this message to DC loud and clear!
