Hi! We're fundraising in support of Champions in Action COVID-19 relief and mentorship programs. Our goal is $50/kilometer for each individual.
Champions in Action is a 501(c)3 working with at-risk youth in Guatemala's red zones and in Washington, DC.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person programs came to a halt in Guatemala and DC. Both sites quickly pivoted to meet the immediate needs of the kids and families in their programs. In Guatemala, the economy and health systems collapsed soon after the first cases. Conservative estimates predict 1.5 million lost jobs. With 70% of the country's economy made up by 'informal' workers, the true extent of job loss may never be known. Since the start of the pandemic, Champions Guatemala has been providing monthly food bags to 205 families. 80% of the families in the program have experienced job loss and 35% rely exclusively on the Champions food bags as their only food source.
In the DC area, Montogomery County, where the majority of the refugee families in the Champions program have been resttled, has the highest percentage of positive cases in the entire DMV area. Furthermore, refugees only receive 3 months of support when being resettled. For the majority of our families, their support has run out and they are navigating finding jobs, homes and preparing for school in a new country on their own. Champions DC is helping these families navigate this transition during the pandemic. And, Champions DC will be providing tablets, internet and other school necessities to help these youth succeed in online school this fall and take the first steps toward achieving the American Dream.
