I wanted to take a minute and share why I'm raising money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
They fund lifesaving blood cancer research around the world.
They provide free information and support services.
They are the voice for all blood cancer patients seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care.
I have personally benefited from their support services, but maybe even their research:
When I was diagnosed I was given two options for treatment: the standard one that had been used for years or a newer more aggressive one. I chose the newer one, because I was in dental school and wanted to get treatment completed ASAP. I started to get neuropathy in my fingers ( tingling and numbing) from the treatment. As a dental student this obviously freaked me out so I called my doctor. They said since my treatment is using eight drugs they could easily take out the one that was causing the problem and things should return to normal after I finished chemo. Luckily, they did return to normal.
I found out later my friend's uncle was not as lucky. He had the same type of cancer I did but a few years earlier so he was not offered the newer Stanford treatment. He got neuropathy in his hands and had to retire from dentistry at a very young age.
I don't know who funded the research that brought about my treatment but I will forever be grateful for it. I was in the middle of dental school so I already had 100k in debt. So, I would have had to leave school with student loans that I would have no way to pay back ( student loans don't go away when you declare bankruptcy 🙄🙄🙄). And I would have missed out on my career that gives me purpose and meaning in life.
This photo is from when I shaved my head. I was getting upset and my mom asked my little brother if he wanted to cut his hair to be like mine. He said yes. He looked so cute it instantly put a smile on my face. 💜💜💜
