Growing up in Michigan, I loved the outdoors. I also happened to love clothing. After college, I threw myself into the fashion world. And while I loved it, I quickly discovered these expensive and beautiful garments were often not made in a beautiful way. I saw the dark side, such as the unregulated chemical dumping in developing nations and the horrific treatment of workers.
Once I become aware of this, I knew I needed to focus my energy and efforts on making it better. I realized nature and fashion are not opposites. They are in fact closely related, but the beauty of nature will not always be there if the beauty of fashion is continued to be created irresponsibly.
I am proud to volunteer for Fair Trade LA because Fair Trade is a simple way to change the system. Fair Trade businesses support organic agriculture, adopt circular economy production processes, generate new models of social enterprise and create new ways to champion the dignity of workers, farmers, artisans and communities around the world.
