Transplant Type - Lung
Travonnia Phelps has a new lease on life. While studying to be a teacher at Old Dominion University, Travonnia was diagnosed with sarcoidosis, an incurable inflammatory disease that attacks various organs of the body. At that time, she was told the scarring to her lungs would require a lung transplant within 10 years. Nonetheless, she persevered and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in 1997 and a Master’s degree in education in 1998. Travonnia was a dedicated middle school science teacher for 17 years, until her disease forced her to end her career early.
After finishing school, Travonnia married her high school sweetheart, Dwayne, and they welcomed a son, Tyquai, in 2001. Tyquai, who was born with cerebral palsy, has become a very intelligent and outgoing young man. Due to his condition, he requires a wheelchair and assistance with his daily routine. With Travonnia’s failing health and Tyquai’s physical needs increasing as he grows, Dwayne had to become the primary physical caregiver of Tyquai. Travonnia longed for the day when her inability to breathe and her constant fatigue no longer prohibit her from doing more things with and for her family. Thankfully, Travonnia received a lung transplant on May 4, 2017. Although Travonnia has recovered from the procedure, her transplant journey is far from over.
The average lung transplant costs approximately $785,000, and that’s only the beginning. Although the costs of the surgery itself are no longer an issue, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. She will need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. These medications are very costly, and they’re as important to her survival as the transplant itself. Travonnia is still paying expenses related to her transplant, and will continue incurring substantial travel, food and lodging expenses as she travels nearly four hours each way for routine visits and follow-up care.
