Nathaniel Colbert, Jr.
Transplant Type: LVAD/Heart
Nathaniel Colbert, Jr. is fighting for his life. In 2006, he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. His illness came as a shock, because there is no family history of heart disease. Now doctors say a heart transplant is critical to his survival. Nathaniel may receive a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) or “artificial heart” which helps his heart pump while he waits for a donor heart to become available.
During this difficult time, Nathaniel is grateful for the love and support of his wife, Shilmar, and their family and friends, including his son and two young grandchildren. His family is incredibly close, and they love to be around each other doing activities like bowling, cookouts, and traveling. Sadly, Nathaniel is often unable to participate as much as he wishes he could. He looks forward to receiving a transplant that will give him the energy to work on cars again, help with yard work, and play basketball—all things that his illness has taken from him. He wants nothing more than to be healthy so he can enjoy watch his grandchildren grow up and feel like himself again. But right now he needs your help.
The average heart transplant costs more than $1.6 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself. Due to his illness, Nathaniel can no longer work, adding to the financial strain.
