Transplant Type: Kidney
What if you were living on borrowed time?
Mateo Moreno is awaiting a new lease on life. He has suffered from diabetes and hypertension for years. His illness caused the need to have all of his toes amputated and has taken a terrible toll on his eyes. In 2018, he was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure, due to his health battles, and now doctors now say a kidney transplant is necessary. While awaiting his transplant, he endures regular dialysis treatments, which impact his quality of life.
During such a challenging time, Mateo is thankful to be surrounded by a strong support system of family and friends. His beautiful wife, Gloria, their son, Ramiro, and daughter-in-law, Melinda, have been by his side every step of the way. Their wonderful family and friends have provided much needed love, encouragement, and support. While it’s been very hard for Mateo and Gloria, these circumstances have also brought them closer together, strengthened their trust in each other, and given them perspective on what matters most in life. Mateo looks forward to doing all of the things he loves, but is unable to do right now- traveling, cooking, and visiting family. He is ready for the transplant that will allow him to have his life back, but right now, he needs your help.
Mateo does not live near his transplant center, and he incurs substantial expenses each time he visits for evaluations and doctors’ appointments. When he receives his transplant, Mateo and Gloria will need to stay near the hospital, during recovery, adding to the financial strain.
Unfortunately, Mateo’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.
The average kidney transplant costs approximately $442,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to the National Foundation for Transplants in honor of Mateo. If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT Texas Transplant Fund, 3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Mateo Moreno” in the memo line.
Thank you for your generosity!
