What if you were living on borrowed time?
Marla Higby is awaiting a new lease on life. In 2014, she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Her diagnosis came as a shock as there is no family history of the condition. Since her diagnosis, her kidney function has steadily declined, and doctors say a kidney transplant is urgently needed.
During this difficult time, Marla is thankful for her husband, as well as family and friends.
Marla has 3 children and 4 grandchildren. They all worry about her health. She is looking forward to receiving a transplant so she can have a normal life. Because her condition leaves her tired and exhausted, she’s unable to participate in the activities she once enjoyed. She wants nothing more than to feel better so she can spend quality time with her family. But right now, she needs your help.
Marla's hope for a new life comes at a very high price. The average kidney transplant costs more than $414,000, and that's only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, Marla still faces significant expenses related to the surgery.
For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications.
Posttransplant medications are very expensive, and they're as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. Marla is unable to work due to her health issues, further adding to her financial burdens.
