Transplant Type: Liver
What if you were living on borrowed time?
Darielys Mercado-Carrion has been given a second chance at life. On March 11, 2021, at only fifteen years old, she became ill and was hospitalized. Her liver failed, and her ammonia levels rose to dangerous levels. Darielys’ doctor said a liver transplant was critical to her survival, and she was placed on the transplant list on March 20, 2021. Luckily, she received her liver transplant on March 21, 2021, just 24 hours after being listed!
Despite her recent health obstacles, Darielys is grateful to have a loving and supportive family. Her parents, younger sister, and two dogs have been by her side every step of the way. Before her health began to decline, Darielys loved traveling, competing in track and field, and spending time with her family and friends. Darielys looks forward to fully recovering from her transplant so that she may do all of these things again. Most importantly, Darielys wants to live a normal life and be a teenager again, but right now, she needs your help.
Unfortunately, Darielys’s new life comes at a very high price.
Even though Darielys’s surgery has always taken place, and her insurance will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she still faces significant medical expenses related to the surgery. She will continue to need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. At this time in her transplant journey, Darielys needs help to afford the expensive prescriptions needed to keep her new liver healthy.
You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to the National Foundation for Transplants in honor of Darielys.
