Transplant Type: Liver
What if you were living on borrowed time?
Caitlin Balint is fighting for her life. When she was seventeen years old, Caitlin was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), and four years ago, she learned she was also suffering from primary sclerosing cholangitis (PCS). Sadly, there is no cure for either of these progressive conditions. After twenty years of diligent treatment and monitoring, she has reached the end stage of these diseases. Now, doctors say a liver transplant is critical to her survival.
Caitlin used to lead an active, independent life, but her health battle has forced her to adjust to an entirely new lifestyle. She is extremely grateful for the love and support of her husband, Dave, their daughter, family and friends, who have all been by her side every step of the way. Caitlin looks forward to the transplant that will allow her to be healthy enough to resume an active lifestyle and feel normal again. More than anything, she hopes to spend more time with her loved ones and to see her daughter grow up, but right now, she needs your help.
Unfortunately, Caitlin’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.
The average liver transplant costs approximately $878,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. Doctors have told Caitlin that her best chance for survival is by using a living donor.
Living donor expenses can be quite costly, adding to the financial strain. While insurance will cover the costs associated with the surgery, the living donor may incur other costs. Donor recipients cannot compensate donors directly. It is of great importance to Caitlin and her family to financially support her liver donor which can only be done legally through a non-profit as intermediary.
You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to the National Foundation for Transplants in honor of Caitlin.
If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT Connecticut Transplant Fund, 3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Caitlin Balint” in the memo line.
Thank you for your generosity!
