Help Free to Run build a new facility in Kabul!
From day one, the safety and wellbeing of our participants has been our top priority at Free to Run. COVID-19 has sadly limited the number of physical locations where we can safely conduct our programs, so we’ve decided to innovate. In 2020, this meant creating activity books to deliver our programming virtually, and conducting weekly check-ins with participants and their families to see how the material was received. In 2021, this means going bigger and bolder than ever before!
Free to Run is taking the next step in Kabul by building out a center dedicated to sports and education for women and girls. This space will provide alumni, participants, and community members with the opportunity to engage with Free to Run in a safe and distanced environment, and participate in sports and group education activities. This new, larger facility will allow us to reach similar numbers of participants to pre-pandemic times which is truly exciting!
We’re planning to open the doors of this groundbreaking facility by early summer 2021. In a place with a delicate security situation like Afghanistan, that means the work starts NOW.
It’s hard to understate the importance of this center for Free to Run programs. Kabul is the province where we have the largest number of participants and the ability to expand further. We’re taking the plunge to build our very own space, 3x bigger than anything we’ve done before! We’re proud to announce a fundraiser dedicated to the building costs of this facility which is expected to be approximately $15,000.
The project has three phases of development. In phase one, we will focus on making the facility a safe space for women and girls to come and be themselves, freely and openly, without worrying about the surrounding security situation in Kabul. In phase two, we will build out the outdoor sports areas and classroom spaces. In phase three, we will build an alumni room and library, gym, and yoga-meditation room. We’re so excited about the potential for this project! When it’s finished, there will be:
Three classroom spaces
An alumni room and library
A yoga-meditation room
100% of your donations will go directly to this new Kabul center. Everyone who donates will receive a link to watch the opening ceremony virtually! If you have a team or a club that is interested in fundraising for one of the specific sports or education areas, please contact us, we would love to talk to you!
The individuals and teams who donate $100 or more will have their names added to a wall in our facility to honor their contributions. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements and updates from the Free to Run team in Kabul!
