This coming May I will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of a liver transplant that saved my life. To mark this incredible milestone, I am running the Boston Marathon! In honor of the 30 healthy years that I was gifted by my donor and their family I am hoping to raise $30,000 to support and raise awareness around the selfless power of organ and tissue donation.
There are currently more than 115,000 men, women and children in the United States waiting for a life-saving transplant. More than 5,000 of these individuals live in the New England region. Every 12 minutes another name is added to the national waiting list and an average of 22 people die each day waiting for their heart, lung, kidney, liver or pancreas transplant. By registering to become a donor you can help save and heal the lives of up to 8 people through organ donation and 75 people with tissue donation. For those awaiting heart, lung, kidney, liver, pancreas and other transplants, you can be their superhero.
New England Donor Services (NEDS) coordinates organ and tissue donation in the six New England states and Bermuda. Through its two affiliated organ procurement organizations, Life Choice Donor Services (LCDS) and New England Organ Bank (NEOB) and its centralized tissue donation services operation, New England Donor Servicies serves thousands of donor families each year who have generously made the decision to donate. Through these donations, New England Donor Services saves and enhances the lives of organ and tissue transplant recipients in our region and across the country.
In supporting New England Donor Services and my quest to reach the Boston Marathon finish line, please know that you will be helping the development and implementation of strategies to increase the life-saving and life-enhancing gifts of organ and tissue donation through effective relationships with our clinical partners, donor families and communities throughout New England. Not to mention, saving lives like mine many years ago.
Thank you in advance for your support!
