As everyone knows from my constant annoying (but sometimes also funny) social media posts, in July 2019 I tore my left Achilles' tendon and had to have surgery to fix it. Recovery timetable is somewhere between 9-12 months, and I've been progressing well so far. Wanting to bounce back strong I tied my fitness goals to one of the most motivated people I've ever met, in Maddison Volgel, and agreed to do a half Ironman in Geneva, NY in July 2020. Events like these are always great opportunities to rally support for charitable causes.
I'd love to support an organization that my friend Ryan McGonigle works with, 10:12 sports, that uses sports to provide mentoring and job training opportunities to west Baltimore youth. It should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me that I feel sports, especially soccer, have given me so much in life. I'm not just talking about my best friends, or a huge network of like-minded people who work hard, stay disciplined, and reach for goals. All of the best parts of my character were built on the field, in practices, games, or even just pick-up. I think everyone would benefit from those experiences, so I absolutely would love to help these kids, in any way I can, to get even just a piece of the opportunity I had.
