The collateral damage of COVID-19 on the rural communities of Nepal has been widespread. Since the government-imposed lock down of March 24, 2020, daily wages for workers have been essentially cut off, and the transportation shut down has made it very difficult to get food and other life necessities to families who live outside a city's reach.
Front Porch, a US-based organization, is working closely with their in-country liaison and founder of the Kevin Rohan Memorial Ecological Foundation (KRMEF), a community and education organization in rural Nepal, to being relief to the families hardest hit by the crisis, families who have been completely cut off from their ability to earn income. KRMEF has been working with local staff to distribute food sets and necessities to 40 families in its community, but they are running out of the funds necessary to keep this assistance going.
For $30, one food set--which contains a sack of rice, 1 liter of cooking oil, 1 packet of salt, 2 kg of potatoes, 2 kg of bitten rice, 2 kg of lentils, 2 kg sugar, 1 packet of tea, 3 packets of spices, 4 face masks, and a bar of soap--is distributed each week at KRMEF and will provide for a family of 4 people. To feed that same family for the month, the cost US $140. KRMEF recently purchased thermal guns and gifted them to the county mayor to use for screening at the municipalities' five entry points in order to reduce future wide-spread potential infection rates.
As Nepal's lock down will likely be prolonged for a few more weeks, the situation will be increasingly harder for this community. Given that it is nearly impossible to ship goods into Nepal--and have the assurance that any goods will reach their intended destination--has impelled us to reach out to you, our community, to bring relief to these rural families.
